Why Is Indoor Air Quality Important?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air is often two to five times more polluted than the air outside, and in some cases far more. Since the average person spends about 90% of their time indoors, the air in your home has a real effect on how you feel day to day. In the short term, it can leave you with everyday irritation and poor sleep that is easy to blame on something else. Over months and years, ongoing exposure can aggravate asthma and allergies and make existing respiratory problems harder to manage.
The upside is that cleaner air pays you back in ways you actually notice: deeper sleep, fewer allergy flare-ups, less dust to wipe down, and a heating and cooling system that stays cleaner and runs more efficiently.
Signs You Have an Indoor Air Quality Problem
Poor air quality is not always obvious, but your home and your body both give off signals. These are the most common ones.
- Dust that resettles quickly. If surfaces are dusty again within hours of cleaning, your filter is not catching the fine particles.
- Lingering odors. Cooking smells, pet odors, or a musty basement smell that hangs around points to poor ventilation.
- Window condensation. Moisture on the glass or in the tracks means humidity is too high, which can lead to mold.
- Symptoms that ease when you leave. Sinus irritation, dry eyes, or a scratchy throat at home that clears up soon after you go out.
- Morning congestion. Waking up stuffy, tight in the chest, or with a dry cough when you do not have a cold.

What You Can Do Yourself
- Control the source. Cut back on aerosol sprays, harsh cleaners, and scented candles, which release chemical fumes into the air, and store paints and solvents away from living spaces.
- Ventilate. Open windows for a few minutes on mild days, and run your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans during and after cooking or showering to clear out moisture and odors.
- Filter and maintain. Change your furnace filter every 60 to 90 days, or every 30 days if you have shedding pets, so the system keeps pulling particles out of the air.

Indoor Air Quality FAQs
Yes. Most retail monitors only read basic temperature and broad humidity. A professional evaluation uses calibrated sensors to pin down particulate counts, chemical-fume (VOC) levels, and how often your air actually turns over. That data lets us target your home's specific problem instead of guessing, so you do not spend money on equipment that does not address the real issue.
An HVAC system does not create illness on its own, but a neglected one spreads what is already there. If the coils are caked in dust and moisture or the ducts are full of debris, the system blows those allergens, mold spores, and dust mites through the whole house every time the blower runs, which can trigger ongoing sinus and throat irritation.
A standard 1-inch furnace filter is built mainly to protect the equipment, stopping large dust and hair from reaching the blower. A whole-home air cleaner uses thick, deeply pleated media (often rated MERV 11 to MERV 16, a scale where higher numbers trap smaller particles) to capture up to 99% of microscopic particles, including fine smoke, bacteria, and pollen.
Filtration alone will not. Media filters are built to catch particles, and odors are gases, so they pass straight through even a high-MERV filter. Removing them takes a different approach: activated carbon media adsorbs the gas molecules that carry the smell, UV systems break down the odor-causing compounds and the bacteria on the coil that produce musty smells, and fresh-air ventilation dilutes what is left by exchanging stale indoor air for outdoor air. Cooking and pet odors usually need at least one of these on top of good filtration, so it is worth telling us odor is your main concern — it changes what we recommend.
Portable units work, but only in the room they are sitting in, and only while they are running. To cover a whole house you need one per room, each with its own filters to buy, its own noise at the fan speeds that actually clean, and its own corner of floor space. They also do nothing about the two things that drive most air quality complaints: humidity and fresh-air exchange.
A whole-home system installs at your ductwork and treats every cubic foot of air the blower moves, in every room, with no noise in your living space and no filters scattered around the house. A portable unit is a reasonable fix for one problem room or a rental. For a house you own, whole-home equipment costs less per room and asks less of you.
Less than most homeowners expect, but it is not zero. Whole-home media filters are usually swapped every 6 to 12 months instead of the 60 to 90 days a 1-inch filter needs. UV lamps keep glowing long after they stop working at full strength, so they get replaced on a schedule, generally every year or two. Humidifiers need their pad changed each season and the mineral scale cleaned off. Ventilators and dehumidifiers mostly need their filters checked and the drain kept clear.
Nearly all of it fits into one annual visit, which is what our maintenance plans are built around. Skipping it is what causes the trouble: a clogged media filter strains the blower, and a dim UV lamp is doing nothing while you assume it is working.
