Why UV-C Is the Germ-Killing Wavelength

Ultraviolet light is not one thing. It covers a range of wavelengths, measured in nanometers, and only the shortest of them does the disinfecting work. That is the difference between equipment installed in your ductwork and the inexpensive UV gadgets sold as sanitizers.

UV-A

The longest and weakest of the three, and the type that makes a blacklight glow. It has almost no germ-killing power at the output these devices produce. Found in: blacklights, sanitizing wands, and nail lamps.

UV-B

The middle range, and the part of sunlight that causes sunburn. It can damage living cells, but it needs far longer exposure to do what UV-C does quickly. Found in: sunlight and tanning lamps.

UV-C

The shortest and strongest. At 254 nanometers it lands where the DNA of mold, bacteria, and viruses absorbs the most damage. Found in: germicidal lamps, including the ones we install.

That 254 nanometer figure is why hospitals, labs, and HVAC systems all settled on the same wavelength. It is also why a glowing bulb is not proof of anything. A blacklight or a battery-powered wand puts out light you can see, but it is not producing UV-C at the strength needed to sterilize a coil around the clock. When you compare products, look for a stated UV-C output rather than a general claim about UV technology.

Types of HVAC UV Lights to Consider

UV systems do their work in different spots inside your heating and cooling equipment. There are three main setups, and which one fits depends on what you want it to handle, where your system has room for the lamp, and whether your main concern is the coil, the air moving through your ducts, or odors.

Do UV Lights Replace My Air Filter?

One of the most common questions is whether a UV light replaces your furnace filter. It does not. They do two different jobs, and they work best together.

What a Filter Does

Your filter traps physical particles like dust, pollen, lint, and pet dander as air passes through. But germs like bacteria and viruses are small enough to slip right through it.

What a UV Light Does

A UV light does not trap anything. It kills the living things a filter misses, like mold and bacteria, and an odor-control model also breaks down fumes.

Used together, a good filter and a UV light cover both the particles and the germs. For the strongest particle filtration, ask about pairing your UV light with a dedicated air cleaner.

Yes, when the light reaches them for long enough. UV-C light damages the DNA of mold, bacteria, and viruses so they cannot grow or spread. It works best on the AC coil, where the light shines on the same spot around the clock and stops mold and slime from forming.
UV-C does inactivate viruses like influenza and the one that causes COVID-19, but how much it helps inside your ducts comes down to contact time. Air moves past a lamp quickly, often in well under a second, and a bulb sized to keep your coil clean is not putting out enough light to do much in that instant. A higher-output air sanitizing lamp is built for exactly that job, and because your blower cycles the same air through the system over and over, each pass adds to the effect. Think of it as one layer working alongside good filtration and fresh air, not as protection from illness on its own.
Most bulbs should be replaced every 12 to 24 months. A bulb often keeps glowing past that point, but its germ-killing strength fades before the visible light does, so going by the glow is not reliable.
Quality residential UV lights are built to be ozone-free. Ozone comes from a shorter wavelength, 185 nanometers, not from the 254 nanometer light that does the germ-killing work.
